Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Hey Team,

Here is your weekly training update. It’s been a great week of snow and snowmaking and we are heading into another weekend. We can expect more open terrain than last weekend, so let’s be sure we approach new terrain with reasonable caution as we explore the great job that snowmaking and grooming have done.

Let’s take a dive into one of the People Skills Fundamentals this week. As we start greeting our guests this weekend and in the future, let be sure to recognize and influence their emotions and motivations right from our introduction. We can do this by inquiring as to how they are feeling about their lesson? What they may be looking forward to? What would you like to accomplish today? What are your goals?

Ensure them that as you work together towards their goals they should feel:

    • Safe

    • Fun

    • Relaxed

    • Excited

These are normal emotions and you are looking to engage them throughout their lesson experience. We want our guests to feel all of those things. Follow up at the wrap up of the lesson. Tying their experience back into these emotions, and explaining how you guided them through their learning process to ensure that they were feeling safe or relaxed will be an absolute guest services win. I believe that we are able to offer that high quality lesson experience.

We are offering NHP and ESW’s all weekend long AM and PM both days. Please sign up ahead of time on instructor.snow.com the password is $noW2122 you should be able to login with your pass number. If it does not work do not panic it may mean your pass and profile are not connected yet. If you do not get signed up ahead of time you may still be able to join in after you have been cleared from lineup as we have extra trainers available this weekend.

You may see some new faces at lineup after this weekend. Be sure to welcome the new pros and offer them assistance if they may need it. We all remember how exciting it was to join this amazing team, and let’s help everyone to make learning the ins and outs a simple process.

Let’s be sure that we are getting our equipment checked. If you have not done that yet please talk to your supervisor at lineup and they will get you the information that you need to know. You may take your gear to the Discovery Rental shop for inspection IF it was inspected last season. IF you have NEW ski gear, you can get a coupon from Matt (Disco Rentals) or Myself (Cape House) to get it checked at the Grind. If you have had your gear checked by an independent shop, you can show your completed inspection to Matt to get your sticker placed on your gear. Please remember, you have 30 days to get this done….it does not need to be done on your first day.

Be sure to check out the attached pdf and familiarize yourself with the 5 T’s. This is a great resource in guiding our decision making process as we make decisions regarding our terrain choice, traffic and many other things.

Thanks team. Let’s have a great weekend and let me know if you have any questions.

  • Hey Team,

We are getting ready for a busy holiday weekend. Since it is a holiday weekend we will only be offering First Tracks all weekend long. Note that the clinic starts at 7:30 am on Saturday for you early risers, and 8:00 am Sunday-Monday. We do have a Personal Riding/Skiing Improvement scheduled for Monday afternoon, once business levels have decreased.

    On the Hill:

We can expect this weekend to be very busy. You are in charge of keeping both yourself and your students safe. Make decisions that will keep all of you out of high traffic areas and look for safe places to stop on the sides of trails. Be sure to be vigilant about looking above and below you when talking with your group, as well as when starting/merging back into the flow of traffic. When in doubt remember the Stop Model: Stop-Think-Options-Power. You have the power to make safe decisions and I would encourage you to be constantly evaluating the environment around you and your students this weekend.

    Tech Talks:

We have 3 different virtual tech talks scheduled again for this Saturday. These tech talks will start promptly at the designated starting time. They are scheduled to be an hour long. Please remember that this is an optional training offered by Mount Snow and the Training Staff, professionalism and understanding will be expected at all times. Quick Mentor Program:

We are going to be continuing a quick mentor program that will last through the rest of the season. You can expect to have a trainer join you for a run or two. This is by no means related to anything disciplinary. We want to offer all of you pros realistic and appropriate feedback based off of your actual teaching. In order to do that; actual teaching needs to be observed. If you are quick-mentored the trainer will give you your feedback after the lesson. We want to continually improve the product that we are offering guests and this is one way that we can do this.

    Certification:

We will continue to run certification training after we are through this holiday period. In the meantime be sure to do some homework and find out about the changes to the exam process and look into some of our new resources that we have available to us.

  • Item descriptionHey Team,

Here is the training update for the weekend of 1-22/23. We are starting bright and early with the 7:30 AM Express for First Tracks on Saturday. We have some Teaching workshops in the morning on Saturday followed by MA and Feedback clinics in the afternoon. There is an Orange Park Sticker clinic offered in the afternoon both days this weekend, more details can be found below. We have Virtual Tech talks offered on Saturday Evening, links below.

Sunday we get out there for First Tracks at 8 am. The morning clinics will have a focus on People Skills and building better connections with our guests. We finish up the afternoon with working on our own personal skiing/riding.

Monday, we once again jump back into Exam prep mode. We have both Ski and Ride exam preps, as well as a morning mixed discipline that will focus on Conquering challenges that we face in our teaching.

    On The Hill:

We have gotten some great snow in the past week. This should make for an amazing weekend. Some of the woods have filled in nicely and are ready to be explored. Remember as you go into the woods, you must both Enter and Exit onto open terrain. It is not acceptable to be taking guests on closed trails. Know your routes and know the trail openings/closures. When riding woods/trees be sure to move your group slowly. Keep everyone moving at a comfortable pace, when in doubt slow them down. It’s better to ride the woods too slow than too fast. Set stopping points, and have your group pair/partner up so that they are never out of anyone’s sight. It is also a good practice to use some sort of call or whistle so they are to maintain contact with the rest of the group.

    Park Sticker Clinic:

We are offering Orange Park Sticker Clinic’s in the afternoon both Saturday and Sunday. These must be signed up for ahead of time. Candidates will be assessed on their ability to coach safe and accurate movement patterns, as well as their ability to offer appropriate demonstrations for students. As this is an Orange Sticker Clinic this weekend, be prepared to be riding/skiing Grommet. You will also be asked to teach in Grommet, so come prepared. The Standards can be found here: https://thesnowpros.org/download/NationalStandards_Freestyle-Specialist-Standards-Update_Posted_5-29-15.pdf; If you are interested in attending, sign up on Instructor.snow

  • Item descriptionHey Team,

Here is the training update for the weekend of 1-29.

We are starting bright and early with the 7:30 AM Express for First Tracks on Saturday. We have some People Skills workshops in the morning on Saturday followed by a mixed discipline clinic with a focus of building fun teaching environments in the afternoon. We have Virtual Tech talks offered on Saturday Evening, links below.

On Sunday First Tracks begins at 8 am. The morning clinics will have a focus on Student Centered Teaching and how we set that up, and how we strive to for that goal. We finish up the afternoon with working on our own personal skiing/riding. There is an Orange Park Sticker Clinic in the afternoon. More details about that available below.

Monday, we do not have Pam Greene with us next week so we will put a pause on our Skiing Exam Preps. We do have a mixed discipline clinic scheduled with Chris Shea, we will see what gear he decides to show up on. The focus is how to offer better Practice time, so it would seem to reason that this group will be taking some laps. We still have snowboard Exam prep groups on Monday, with the Am focus being on the Exam process and preparation, and the Pm being specifically geared towards the Level 3.

    On The Hill:

We are expecting some snow overnight and through the day tomorrow. We know that this will mean excited crowds and students. While we may not receive the amount that areas that are east of us may get its still important to be mindful of how that may affect our day. As the day progresses it’s reasonable to expect the snow will get pushed around and bumped up. AS that happens it makes terrain more challenging as well as tiring out ourselves and our students. Be sure to pay attention to the fatigue level of your group as well as yourself. Take breaks on the trail, rest when your group needs it. If they are getting thrown around and looking out of control take them to mellower, more comfortable terrain.

    Park Sticker Clinic:

We are offering Orange Park Sticker Clinic’s in the afternoon on Sunday. This must be signed up for ahead of time. Candidates will be assessed on their ability to coach safe and accurate movement patterns, as well as their ability to offer appropriate demonstrations for students. Let’s have a great weekend. Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Hey Team,

Here is the training update for the weekend of 2-5.

We will most likely be on an Ice Delay for First Tracks in the morning. If the Mountain Ops team is able to get lifts spinning we will get out there at 7:30-8 on Saturday. We have some Teaching Style workshops in the morning on Saturday followed by a mixed discipline clinic centered around exploring the Terrain Parks in the afternoon. Come to this if you are interested in Ideas about what we offer, and how to best utilize the amazing parks we have at Carinthia. If you are not interested in exploring Carinthia, you can hang with Dan Silverman who will be working on building fun teaching environments. We have Virtual Tech talks offered on Saturday Evening, links below. Last weekend we somehow wound up with multiple Alpine Tech Talks occurring at the same time. I want to thank those of you that made the most of that opportunity, and I appreciate your flexibility.

On Sunday First Tracks begins at 8 am. If you are planning on attending the Alpine First Tracks I highly recommend that you check out the Alpine Tech talk on Saturday night. Doug has some really cool ideas about how to link those together. The morning clinics will have a focus on Building Connections with your students; how we set that up, and how we strive to for that goal. We finish up the afternoon with working on our own personal skiing/riding. We have our last clinic with Brian Donovan scheduled for Sunday Afternoon.

Monday, we have Pam Greene in the morning so we will get out there working on our readiness for Alpine exams. We do have a mixed discipline clinic scheduled with Tera Adams. The focus is how to build our teaching skills. This can be challenging when we see similar students/abilities, and Tera has some great ideas on how to do that. In the afternoon we have an Alpine Exam Prep with Matt Heller, if you haven’t gotten a chance to ski with him this season you should hop right in. We still have snowboard Exam prep groups on Monday, with the Am focus being on the Exam process and preparation, and the Pm being specifically geared towards the Level 3.

    On The Hill:

We received a good bit of precipitation today, unfortunately it did not change over to snow the way it had been forecasted. Because of this expect ice around the parking lots and moving around the resort. Plan extra travel time and wear your trekkers. It is the time of the season when people begin to let their guard down. Historically this is the time of the year that we see the most injuries. Let’s continue to be mindful when we are sliding, don’t become complacent when stopping or merging with traffic. Choose safe stopping points in order to keep yourself and your students safe. If you need to stop to watch your group be sure to come to a complete stop before turning around to view them. Do not let yourself become distracted, focus your attention on the moment you are in. Have your group ski/ride past you, vary your teaching styles to allow for safe group movement that offers varied views for demonstration and feedback purposes. If you are wondering how to do that reach out to a trainer/supervisor or attend one of the clinics offered this weekend.

• Hey Team,

Here is the training update for the weekend of 2-12.

I hope you are ready to get out there early tomorrow for the 7:30 First Tracks with Keith Rodney. We have a few chances to ski with Keith tomorrow so be sure to check out his morning or afternoon clinic if you want to get out there and do some high end skiing while also hearing about the really cool stuff that is happening at the National Level. He is a great resource and were taking advantage of having him here this weekend. The morning focus is on Creating Epic Experiences. Come to this if you are interested in Ideas about how to offer amazing experiences. In the afternoon we will head out and rip the mountain with a focus on High Performance Skiing/Riding. We have Virtual Tech talks offered on Saturday Evening, links below.

On Sunday, First Tracks begins at 8 am. The morning clinic is a mixed discipline clinic that will have a focus on Building Connections with your students; how we set that up, and how we strive to for that goal. Come to this session and be ready to share and collaborate with the other group members. We finish off the weekend working on our own personal skiing/riding. Steph McCathron- the head Devo coach will be out there for skiing ready to rip. Come hang with her if you haven’t gotten a chance to ski with her in the past. A good time is sure to be had. We are also working on our Personal Riding on the snowboard side.

Monday, we have a mixed discipline clinic scheduled with Tera Adams. The focus is how to building connections with our students. This can be challenging when we see similar students/abilities, and Tera has some great ideas on how to do that. We still have snowboard Exam prep groups on Monday, with the Am focus being on the Exam process and preparation, and the Pm being specifically geared towards the Level 3.

    On The Hill:

We can expect moderate digit temps throughout the day tomorrow. Dress warm but be ready to hopefully shed a layer as the day goes on. There is a nasty word in the forecast-premature snow. Best to be prepared and be wrong, than unprepared and right. As we progress into the season lets be sure to continue prioritizing safety. This could mean slowing and stopping more when riding with your group, it could be using a spotter in the terrain park. Let’s look for ways this weekend that we can encourage safety throughout our lessons. We want our students to be safe as well as trust us. One of the most important people skills fundamentals is: Develop relationships based on trust. People skills are about communicating in effective ways to develop trust and achieve favorable relationships. Building rapport with students depends on instructors’ self-awareness and their abilities to identify and adapt to the guests’ needs, motivations, and emotions. For students to feel confident taking risks and being open to new learning, instructors must first establish trust among the group. By recognizing and incorporating safety throughout our lesson we can continually build that relationship. You can read more about those fundamentals in the article attached.

Let’s have a great weekend. Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Hey Team,

Here is the training update for the weekend of 2-18.

We are moving into a very busy holiday period so we will be offering First Tracks Clinics this weekend and throughout the week. Plan on getting out there early this week to catch a bit of Idea Sharing, and Coaching first thing in the morning. We do have First Tracks starting at 7:30 tomorrow. However, it may be an indoor discussion due to the weather. If weather permits we will head up any available lifts.

We do have a few tech talks scheduled for tomorrow. We have a torchlight parade scheduled for tomorrow, so we are going to be canceling the Children’s Tech Talk. However we will still offer the Alpine Tech Talk as well as the Snowboard Tech Talk. Speaking of the Alpine tech talk we have a returning guest clinician, Joe Hanzalik will be leading the Alpine Tech talk. So be sure to tune into that if you are not participating in the Torchlight.

We do also have Gary Caudle or Griz joining us this week. He will be out on snow for First Tracks ready to chat about Difficulties and Engaging Young Students. I am sure that many of you have dealt with this scenario this season. Come hang with Griz for some insight on how to handle those situations. Remember this is a First tracks so don’t spend too much time chatting. If you would like to spend more time chatting with Griz, we do have him on Wednesday evening for a Virtual Tech Talk. Tune in to this for some great conversation and great ideas.

    On The Hill:

Mother nature has given our snowmaking and grooming teams another wrench in the works with the warm up and then freeze the last two days. Be sure to monitor the terrain status on the website as it may change throughout the day/weekend. Never assume that the terrain will be friendlier or more forgiving wherever you may head to. Be sure to consult your supervisors or other instructors before moving your group/student up to terrain of higher difficulty. It’s better to keep students on terrain that they are comfortable on and move them toward ownership, than to challenge them too much on uncomfortable terrain. With this being a holiday weekend, we can expect there to be more resort traffic, so let’s focus on how we can keep our guests excited and safe. We can do this by putting them on comfortable terrain, checking in with them continuously, engaging in 2 way communication, and building fun lessons that help them get to their goals.

    Tech Talks:

We have 2 different virtual tech talks scheduled again for this Saturday. These tech talks will start promptly at the designated starting time. They are scheduled to be an hour long. Please remember that this is an optional training offered by Mount Snow and the Training Staff, professionalism and understanding will be expected at all times. • Hey Team,

Here is the training update for the weekend of 2-26.

We are in a very busy holiday period so we will be offering First Tracks Clinics this weekend. Plan on getting out there early this week to catch a bit of Idea Sharing, and Coaching first thing in the morning. We do have First Tracks starting at 7:30 tomorrow.

We do have a few tech talks scheduled for tomorrow. We will have a Children’s Tech Talk, as well as Alpine Tech Talk and Snowboard Tech Talk. We had Griz here this past week for a few clinics and the talks, due to technical difficulties while he was here we will be looking to reschedule his tech talk from the other night, and we will be offering more “Chats with Griz,” in the new few weeks.

We may be adding some afternoon clinics for Sunday afternoon, depending on business levels. Stay tuned for more information.

The Mount Snow Photo Hunt is still going on through the weekend. Check out the attached flier and be sure to participate. It has been fun seeing all of the great pictures people have been taking throughout the week. There will be prizes awarded for participation.

We also have a great opportunity to tune into a tech talk from one of our Eastern Snowboard Ed Staff Members this week. Tom Mulligan will be presenting on “How to make a connection” this Thursday March 3rd at 5:30 pm. Go to this link if you would like to participate in that: Zoom Link Here

    On The Hill:

We received a good bit of snow today. While it is a welcome change to the wetter precipitation we have been receiving lately, keep in mind that with good snow comes some things to be cautious of. Areas of trails that were easily recognizable as spots to avoid last week may look completely covered now. Just underneath the snow you may find bare ground and rocks/dirt. Be cautious as you explore terrain. Don’t expect the snow to be trustworthy, and use good judgment when taking students to new terrain. It is much better to be flexed, with your CM over the equipment than extended and unable to get any “grip.”

  • Hey Team,

Here is the training update for the weekend of 3-5-22.

We have big news this week. There was a PSIA tryout the last couple days held at Stowe. I am very proud to announce that we have two folks on our staff that were successful this week. Keith Rodney made the Alpine ETS Staff, and Maureen Drummey made the Alpine Development Team. While they have been very actively involved in PSA in the past, these are new roles for both of them. If you have been out on the hill with either of them this season you know how hard they have been working, and all of that hard work paid off. Next time you see either of them be sure to give them a big Congratulations!!

    Congratulations Maureen!! Congratulations Keith!!

We have First Tracks starting at 7:30 tomorrow. After that we have a mixed discipline clinic that will focus on building our teaching skills, plan on sharing ideas, tips and tricks if you are able to make it to this clinic. On The Hill:

The snow this week has been fantastic. With that in mind we can expect to be very popular this weekend. Be sure to be vigilant about checking your surroundings. Do not expect that the guests skiing and riding around you are able to stop or maintain control. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. Give caution whenever you can, and encourage your students to be monitoring the hill. It will be a great weekend to reinforce the Responsibility code. If you need to stop to watch your group be sure to come to a complete stop before turning around to view them. Do not let yourself become distracted, focus your attention on the moment you are in.

  • Hey Team,

Here is the training update for the weekend of 3-11-22.

We have a great weekend in store with some snow in the forecast. Starting at 7:30 am tomorrow we have First Tracks scheduled. After that we have our Significant Other Clinic. Invite your significant other to come and Ski with Maureen, or come out and Snowboard with Toby. We are looking forward to thanking your significant other for sharing you with us this season. In the afternoon, We once again have Griz, here with us. He will be running a mixed discipline clinic that will focus is on engaging kids through play. Expect to have a ton of fun, either on skis or on board. So show up ready to have a great afternoon. If you are unable to make the afternoon clinic with Griz do not worry you can still attend his tech talk and catch up on all of the wit and wisdom that he will be providing.

We do have a few tech talks scheduled for tomorrow. We have an in person Children’s Tech Talk, that will be taking place at 4:30 upstairs in the clubroom on the top floor of the Discovery Building. Griz will be leading that discussion and we hope to have less technical difficulties than his last talk. We will also have our Alpine Tech Talk and Snowboard Tech Talk. More information about those below.

On Sunday we get out there bright and early with First Tracks, with Mo and Tera. Then we are doing another deep dive into the people skills fundamentals in order have better connections with our students. In the afternoon we are going to be doing a lot of skiing/riding, while working improving our own personal skills.

Monday, we have another opportunity to get out on the hill and work with Griz as we continue to work on our knowledge and understanding of “Working in the Children’s zone.” Feel free to attend that clinic on which ever gear you prefer. We have snowboard Exam prep clinics scheduled in the morning and afternoon, on Monday. The Pm Exam prep is solely for those with the intention of working toward their Level 3.

    On The Hill:

The grooming and snowmaking team have done an incredible job of recovering from the rain that we received earlier this week. Because of that the snow the last few days has been fantastic. With that in mind we can expect that areas off-piste may still be firm and to use or avoid those with caution. As we are on snow this weekend, how can we interact with the guests in order to ensure both their safety and our own. Remember that when we interact with a guest we have the opportunity to educate. Help the guests around you that may not be using terrain appropriately. Offer assistance or direction about where they might go in order to have a safer more fun time. We have the ability to improve or detract from the guest experience, let’s do our best to encourage a better experience for everyone while we are out there. We can do this by checking our surroundings. Do not expect that the guests skiing and riding around you are able to stop or maintain control. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. Give caution whenever you can, and encourage your students to be monitoring the hill. If you have the opportunity to provide insight to a guest: Don’t scold, but instead offer friendly advice. People do not appreciate being told what to do, but if they are offered a “helpful hint” they walk away from the experience with a different perspective.

  • Hey Team,

Here is the training update for the weekend of 3-19-22.

The word for the weekend is wet. A little wet weather won’t deter us, we will be out there for the last Am Express Starting at 7:30 am tomorrow. After that we will be working on having fun in the beginner zone. There is a very likely chance that this may become an indoor discussion. So come to that ready to share fun ways to engage beginners. In the afternoon we will be exploring the fundamentals, With the weather forecasted to be what it is, plan on having a great indoor discussion that helps us to understand how we interact with the fundamentals.

We do have a few tech talks scheduled for tomorrow. More information about those below.

On Sunday we get out there bright and early with First Tracks, with Mo and Tera. Then we are doing another deep dive into the concept of student centered teaching. Come to this clinic on any equipment and see how we all strive for that goal. In the afternoon we are going to be improving our personal skiing. We are also offering for the first time ever the long awaited Snowskate clinic. This will be an opportunity to understand the learning connection more deeply as we play on Snowskates. There is limited room in this clinic as we do not have any snowskates to offer, but there are a few available as loaners. This will not be a “Learn To” clinic but will be working on understanding the learning connection while on snowskates.

    On The Hill:

With Spring temperatures and rain in the forecast, it will become imperative that you scope or check out terrain before trusting it. In the park we like to use the phrase: Pre-ride, Re-ride, Free ride. Let’s take that same idea onto all faces of the mountain. Pre-ride = looking at the terrain before making any attempt to ride it to the appropriate level. Re-ride = spend time on the terrain before committing to anything new or challenging on it. Explore so you are familiar with all variances. Free-ride = time to approach the intensity needed in order ski/ride that terrain as it is intended. This does not mean throw caution to the wind, but instead use the terrain with care and be aware of the hazards that may present themselves. Extreme temperatures and weather can affect trails run to run. So do not expect terrain to look the same throughout the day.

In the afternoon we will be exploring the fundamentals, The purpose of this is to help us to understand how we interact with the fundamentals, we are joined by our Head Devo Coach Steph McCathron so expect to do a good bit of skiing, and working outside of the beginner zone in this clinic.

We do have a few tech talks scheduled for tomorrow. We have Griz Caudle scheduled to do a virtual tech talk for any folks that would like to join in on that. Our Alpine Tech Talk is canceled for this week, so our Alpine Trainers can attend the Cooper Foundation Fundraiser, information found below. Tera Adams will be leading the snowboard Tech Talk. On Sunday we get out there bright and early with First Tracks, with Mo and Tera. Then we are Jumping into the topic of having more fun. Come to this clinic on any equipment and see how we all strive for that goal. In the afternoon we are going to be improving our personal skiing and riding. Make sure to sign up for the clinics that you would like to attend ahead of time. You can do that on the instructor.snow page. On The Hill:

With Spring temperature changes in the forecast, it will become imperative that you know what terrain is expected to look like throughout the day. We can typically expect firm in the morning and softening as the sun hits it and the temps warm up. This will lead to wetter throughout the afternoon and then firming as the sun drops. In the parking lots and walkways this can me slippery, so don’t be in any rushes when moving about the resort and tread carefully. On the hill we want to avoid over-terraining our students whenever possible. Start small and gradually build up to ensure that your students can handle the terrain that you are on. If you find yourself in this scenario consider the Stop Model. Stop-Think- what are your options? Can you safely navigate the terrain or should you walk or call ski patrol for a taxi? Do you have other ways to get the students back to terrain that is more appropriate and less challenging. You have the power to make decisions that will keep you and your students safe. As we finish out the season keep in mind the next season’s activities. Staying safe/healthy in March and April can mean you are able to participate in your summer activities, like biking, hiking throughout the summer.
