MOUNTAIN CAMP/RIDE (7-14 year old) 

9:00-9:30 Drop-Off & Class Splits 

Students are greeted, RFID media card scanned for validation and verbally assessed for level placement and provided a lesson vest by the Camp staff. Allergies will be confirmed. Parents should be informed of the photo security procedure for the end of day pick-up. Parents can be reminded to hold their media for next time. Classes will be formed outside near the Big Dipper, in the rear of the Discovery Center. All children should use the bathroom prior to getting dressed and heading to the slopes. 

Groups will take one to two assessment runs to make any necessary adjustments, working with Leads and Supervisors to finalize class assignments. Make sure your class is compatible. Small differences in ability are likely, so unless there are clear inconsistencies, aim to work with your group. Check-in with supervisors to: 

  • Make any group changes necessary and confirm your group.  

  • Check if any late arriving children need to be picked up 

  • Ensure your class list/scan is complete. 

  • Hand in your lunch order. 

Class lists are created by instructors by scanning prior to leaving the learning area. It is the responsibility of the instructor to ensure the accuracy of the scan and to make notes on their own to reference in case of emergency (Lost Child or Injured Guest). 

Check to make sure that each child has a media card with lift access in a pocket before parents/guardians leave. 

9:30-11:30 On-Snow Activities 

Build a lesson based on current abilities, interests and needs. Pay close attention to the need for a bathroom or warm-up breaks. Ensure children are drinking water - hot chocolate should only be provided on very cold days. 

Instructors with Mountain Camp groups that are ready to move out of the Discovery Center, must first check-in with a supervisor. 

11:30-1:30 Supervised Lunch (may be staggered lunch shifts depending on business levels) 

Lunch times are determined by supervisors based on lesson volumes. During peak periods, shorter, staggered lunches are offered to accommodate all lesson participants. Instructors should verify what time they will break for lunch with supervisors prior to leaving the base area.  Lunch should be approximately 45-60 minutes long. 

Allergies and dietary requirements are to be noted by instructors. Instructors are responsible for ensuring lunches collected correspond to those restrictions. Under no circumstances are instructors to administer any drugs. Children who require an autoimmune injector (such as EpiPen) must carry them on their person; instructors should know where it is located. 

1:30-3:30 On-snow Activities 

Ensure lesson pacing allows for prompt arrival in the Discovery area for pick-up. 

3:30 Full Day Pick-Up 

Parents attempting to collect their child on the way over to the fenced-in meeting area should be politely asked to meet at the level flag in order to ensure everyone is properly accounted for. Children being picked up should only be entrusted to designated adults with the security photo. Please refer to the pick-up procedure in this document. 

Be sure to fill out a progress card for each child; this can be done during lunch. This is a tool meant to help communicate to parents/guardians and staff alike how the child has improved and what their next step is. Do not tick the “Mastered” column until the child is consistently demonstrating a skill. 

Offer clear feedback to parents, detailing what the focus was for the day and how it was achieved. Answer questions as much as possible and direct parents towards the next lesson they should book: should the child stay in the same level or move on to the next? Be sensitive to both the parent’s and child’s expectations. Remember: the emphasis is first and foremost on safety, then fun. Refer to terrain choices and skill goals to make that decision. As a general rule, it’s always safer to keep children in the same level to start with and move them up. When in doubt, refer to your supervisor
